General Tips regarding phone service and internet service:
- Phones have no dial tone...............Unplug computer, fax, answering machine and cordless phones from all outlets. Anytime you unplug something, you have to unplug both the electric and the phone connections. Wait a few minutes then try your line again.
- Outside Line Problem.............This is usually indicated by the following: No dial tone on all phones, Can't call in or out on all phones, Get cut off on all phones, Noise or static on all phones.
- Inside Wire Problem...............This is indicated by a phone working at one jack but not at another, or loose or broken phone jack. If you did your own wiring, check it out to make sure it has not been damaged or have any bare wires exposed to moisture.
- Telephone Equipment Problem......Worn cords, broken cord clips, stuck receiver buttons or push buttons, one phone off hook causing no dial tone on all phones, modem or fax line still connected, cordless phone needs to be reset (unplug from both phone and A/C for 5 minutes).
- Internet Cannot be dialed up.........Computer says "no dial tone", unplug the computer and plug a phone into this jack and see if there is dial tone. If there is dial tone, it is a good indication of a modem problem. Reboot (restart) the computer and try it again. If problem continues, plug the computer into a different jack. If problem continues, make sure that you are not using splitters and a good line cord going direct from the jack to the back of the computer. Unplug any other equipment you might have such as cordless phones or fax machines. Through the process of elimination, you should be able to determine if it is the line or the modem.
- If you have done all the above, then call your phone company and have them check the line for noise, static, etc.
- If the line tests o.k., call a computer person and you will most likely need a new modem. It is important to have a good warranted surge protector between your computer and your jack and electric. Unplug this however during any electrical storm for extra protection. Always unplug the phone line to your computer and the electrical when you go away on vacation
- Computer cannot dial up server.............error message says cannot establish a connection with the server. Reboot the computer and try again.
- Computer cannot verify password..........retype login (user) name and password, making sure you do not have caplock on, plus do not use the @mwt.net after the user name. If still won't work, call and I will check it out on my side.
- VIRUSES - Unfortunately, viruses are a part of internet life. Hopefully most of you have a virus protector, but did you know that you have to make sure it stays updated. New viruses come out everyday; the only way your virus program can stay up to date is for you to update your files on a regular basis. If you have a virus protector, dig into it, find out how it updates your files so that your computer can stay protected, find out how to have e-mail protection. If you cannot find it in the "help" section, go online and go to the virus program's website and do some homework. Viruses don't just happen to other people, it can happen to you. Take the time to learn your virus program and make sure to keep it up to date.
